Dental Fear

Upon graduating Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1982, Dr. Lipton found that many dental patients are so fearful that they avoided the dentistry they needed for optimal oral health. Dr. Lipton felt there had to be a better, safer alternative for treatment for these severely apprehensive patients. He quickly gained a reputation for treating fearful patients by reducing their discomfort and trepidation.

By 1987, Dr. Lipton founded his first hospital-based treatment center where a patient could be treated in the operating room, by a team of dental specialists, while under general anesthesia. An ideal situation wherein the patient could have an anesthesiologist deliver anesthesia, this practice was widely accepted by fearful patients. In 1990, The Journal of The American Dental Association listed Dr. Lipton's hospital treatment center as one the most prominent dental phobia treatment centers in the United States.

Dr. Lipton understands the multitude of reasons an individual stays away from the dentist. Fear may stem from negative prior experiences with dentistry, the fear of needles or sound of the drill, claustrophobia, the smell of a dental office, or hyperactive gag reflex. If you or someone you love suffers from dental fear, Dr. Lipton will be happy to consult with the patient and determine the most appropriate venue for treatment.

Depending on the severity of fear and course of treatment, options may include local anesthesia in the office, I.V. sedation in the office with sedation provided by an anesthesiologist, or treatment in the hospital operating room with general anesthesia by an anesthesiologist.
Don't let dental fear destroy your oral health. Call Dr. Lipton today, and discover a new reason to smile.
